This Hospitality and Tourism internship is sponsored by the Vermont Department of Labor.
$20/hour · 40 hours a week · Six Weeks (September 3rd to October 12th)
The Vermont Granite Museum is looking for three interns that are interested in gaining practical and educational experience in the hospitality and tourism industry, specifically the sectors including recreation, travel and tourism, and meetings and events. The ideal candidates will have prior entry level experience in either the hospitality or tourism field.
This internship is six weeks long and would run from September 3rd to October 12th and will expose the interns to the planning and management practices used in the hospitality industry. Interns would be exposed to the hospitality industry while working alongside Vermont Granite Museum staff as well as visits to speak with professionals at other hospitality industry sites, including museums, downtown organizations, art galleries, heritage sites, parks, agricultural attractions, art venues, guide companies, and travel agencies in Central Vermont.
Interns will select one of the three sectors and will learn about the sector through observation, reading, practice, and speaking with industry professionals in Vermont.
The intern will gain experience by:
1) Learning how to be an exceptional host and help to create a warm and welcoming environment for patrons, this will include providing them with information, assistance, suggestions, and opportunities to ask questions and engage in dialogue.
2) Creating, promoting, and managing people’s visits to the Barre-Montpelier area and Eastern Vermont towns that had granite quarries and manufacturing facilities.
3) Creation of a real and entertaining day and overnight trip suggestions for prospective visitors to Vermont that are interested in Vermont’s granite heritage. These suggested itineraries will be shared on the museum’s website and social media accounts.
4) Database creation of Central Vermont’s restaurants, lodgings, parks, museums, art galleries, and other places of interest to visitors. This material will be shared in an interactive map on the museum’s website.
5) Creation of virtual walking tours of cemeteries and downtowns of granite centers in Vermont to be shared on the museum’s website.
6) Learning how to be a roaming interpreter and program tour guide.
7) Knowledge and practical experience in researching and developing Vermont-based adventures for potential tourists.
8) Learning how to prepare, promote, and manage a variety of social, business, and educational events at the Vermont Granite Museum. These meetings and events will range from monthly executive board meetings to our annual Granite Festival.
9) Critical steps involved in creating a successful meeting or event as well as serving as an event host for someone that is renting the facility.
10) Design and execution skills to create a successful program, including determining event goals, assembling the team, establishing a budget, choosing the date, selecting the presenters and caterers, marketing, collecting funds, setting up for the event, and managing the actual event.
11) Understand the components of a typical budget and learn how to use that budget to run and guide the business.
12) Learn how to create a management system and a functional budget to help run a business in hospitality and tourism.
